This was my final day to work with Mrs. Shepard and her 10th graders in the writing lab. Most students had already completed their Destiny Quest book reviews and were working on the visual book report.
Cathy shared exemplary samples of visual book reports made using
PosterMyWall, PowerPoint, and a book trailer made with
Animoto. If I do this project again, I would walk students through the entire process by making a class visual book report and then have them work individually.

Students have been entering the
Allegiant contest and I can't wait to see who wins the honor of being the first student to check out
Veronica Roth's Allegiant (#3 in the Divergent series). I also can't wait to read it, though I may have to reread
Divergent and
Insurgent as I read them both over a year ago.
Erika showed me some cool repair tools that I would love to have in my own library someday.

You don't know how HARD it was to leave Allegiant on my desk over the weekend, but I resisted. I even had a teacher beg Friday, promising she would return it Monday too. Luckily it's really an inexpensive ebook online, so I'll get to read it eventually, one way or another. I think your class with Shepard went fine. Kids just need to see someone else walk through the steps sometimes to "get" it or realize its not such a daunting task, despite the great screenshots provided, etc. Some kids just need the visual stimuli, but you saw first hand not everyone responded to even that. It amazes me how we have to tap into the various learning styles for classes EVEN when we've planned an interesting project that allows them to turn on their own creative juices. I hope Shepard follows up with the book trailer idea now that she saw a few. I really didn't mean to show those, but I'd forgotten they were a part of the samples I was showing, and once I saw the spark of interest in the teacher, well I had to go ahead and show a few. What ever it takes to get the collaborating teacher wanting more, and realizing we can be collaborative partners, right? If we do go one step further (with the book trailer seed that was planted) we will offer to hep with assessment as well, which will hopefully interest her MORE and also help her see us a fully invested collaborative partner. And don't forget, a teacher's testimony to her department can go a long ay in getting other teachers to come in for a consult about a collaborative project. You have a great week at school.
